You Should Look for a Pro With These HVAC Certifications

You Should Look for a Pro With These HVAC CertificationsDo you have trust issues when it comes to hiring someone to work on your HVAC system? That's not necessarily a bad thing because it can be challenging to sort through all the HVAC companies out there and assess reliability. Fortunately, there are some markers that can help you discern a solid, reputable company from a fly-by-night. HVAC certifications are, in fact, one of the best ways to prove a company has an investment in providing good customer service over the long term.

Study the websites of the most reputable HVAC companies and you'll usually find information about certifications, licensing, and memberships. Here are some of the most common.

NATE

NATE is an acronym for North American Technician Excellence and is the largest nonprofit organization for certifying technicians in the HVAC industry. NATE-certified technicians must pass specialized certification tests, and while NATE doesn't guarantee the work of those who receive certification, attainment of a certificate does signify that the technician has passed rigorous testing in the field of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning.

EPA 608 Certification

The Environmental Protection Agency requires anyone who handles refrigerant to have EPA 608 certification. Without this certification, technicians cannot buy refrigerant legally. Contractors must pass a written exam to receive this certification.

Dealer Certification

Certain manufacturers offer HVAC technician certification for those dealers who meet specific guidelines. Homeowners shopping around for an HVAC contractor and who are interested in a particular brand may be attracted to a dealer with this certification, which can guarantee that a contractor's expertise is at a high level.

State Licensing

Although Illinois does not require state licensing of HVAC contractors, a contractor may have to apply for a license at a local level, or comply with other state or local laws, so discuss this with the contractor you choose.

Better Business Bureau

Membership in BBB signifies that a company has made a public commitment to maintaining high business standards.
